The BCMEA’s Data Analytics team leverages digitalized tools to support our members in making smart and timely investments into workforce planning. Through predictive modelling and forecasting informed by quality data, we optimize members’ operations to best meet labour requirements for B.C.’s waterfront.

This means the shared waterfront workforce receives the required training at the right time, to work at the right location to ensure the safe and efficient movement of goods, ultimately creating a more competitive Canadian supply chain.

In the drive to digitalize workforce planning, the BCMEA developed WaterfrontWorks – a revolutionary advanced data tool to address maritime industry challenges and support smooth port operations in B.C. Using predictive analytics and scenario planning, it identifies issues in advance, allowing for strategic interventions to train, upskill and recruit to match longshore labour requirements to meet the demands at Canada’s West Coast ports.

WaterfrontWorks is complemented by a data governance program and a portal that brings together supply chain partners through real-time insights into labour resourcing requirements. Ensuring that the data used in forecasting and training systems is accurate, consistent, and secure is critical to making informed investments in training.

Now more than ever, it’s important that trained longshore labour is available to respond to disruptions and cargo surges when they happen. Better workforce planning means a more reliable and resilient Canadian supply chain.

WaterfrontWorks is more than just a technical tool — it is a digital solution with a compelling human element. WaterfrontWorks embodies our shared commitment to working alongside our members and key stakeholders to enhance the reliability and efficiency of our supply chain operations and improve affordability for all Canadians. This collaborative effort underscores the importance of human ingenuity and dedication in driving technological advancements.

Enhancing port efficiency with advanced digital tools like WaterfrontWorks not only accelerates cargo movement but also strengthens Canada’s global trade position. More efficient ports mean reduced costs, improved reliability, and a stronger economic impact for British Columbia and beyond.

Data-Driven Decisions Daily

Enhancing digital capabilities, helps our members make critical decisions which improves the efficiency of the country’s entire supply chain. Training requirement models, process improvement initiatives and cohesive workforce planning tools are just a few of the modernizations the BCMEA adopted. The more data available leads to better decisions for increased reliability and confidence from our members.
